FAQ

WHAT IS LETTERHEADS 2019: BIG IN JAPAN?

It’s a Letterheads meet, a gathering of sign writers/painters and lettering professionals/enthusiasts for the purposes of sharing, learning and spending time together. While much of the meet will be ticketed, there will also be lots of free stuff for the public including an exhibition, food stalls and a little shop with merchandise. Learn more about the Letterheads and check out the timetable of events and activities.

WHEN IS IT?

Thursday 11th 09:00 - 19:00
Friday 12th 09:00 - 19:00
Saturday 13th 09:00 - 19:00
Sunday 14th 10:00 - 18:00

WHERE IS IT?

IID - Ikejiri Institute of Design
2 Chome-4-5 Ikejiri, Setagaya-ku, Tōkyō-to 154-0001

HOW DO I GET THERE?

  • Train: Closest station is Ikejiri-ohashi station on the “Den-en-toshi” line. From there is is a 10 minute walk.

  • Taxi: Shibuya station is one of the biggest stations in Tokyo and from there you can catch a taxi to the venue which takes about 15 minutes and cost around 1000yen.

We recommend the Google maps for getting around Tokyo.

HOW MUCH IS IT?

Entry to the public areas of the meet are completely free. To be able to paint and attend workshop you need a ticket that can be bought here.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

As Mark Oatis says, ‘Bring something to show, trade or demonstrate… or at least, bring your kit and be prepared to get your hands “dirty”’.

Do Bring

  • Your brushes and kit, as though you were going on a job.

  • Piece(s) for the auction. Can be Tokyo Letterheads themed, but this isn’t a requirement.

  • Any work-in-progress that you’d like to continue with at the meet (we’ll have a mixture of aluminium and wooden panels in a variety of sizes for everyone).

  • Speakers to play your music (we won’t have anything outside the bar/cafe area).

  • Water-based/acrylic paints if you prefer to use these, as we’ll only be supplying oil-based.

Don’t Bring

  • Enamel, or other flammable paints (we’ll be providing these).

  • Solvents and other flammable liquids.

  • Pets.

WHAT CATERING IS PROVIDED?

For ticket holders we will provide lunch each day. Drinks and refreshments will be available throughout, and there will be a cash bar on site each day.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE NEARBY?

Here is a map showing useful shops and facilities nearby.

WHAT HASHTAG SHOULD I USE?

We encourage people to tag social media posts about the meet with #TokyoLetterheads.

HOW DO I USE MY PHONE IN JAPAN?

The best option is renting a pocket wi-fi at the airport you land at. Then multiple people can connect to that device. One company that works well is “Japan Wifi Rental” but there is also many others that you can find easily online.

WHERE CAN I STAY?

The Letterheads event venue is situated in the Ikejiri neighbourhood which is close to Shibuya station. Since Tokyo is huge, please look for accomodation in the west part of Tokyo, preferably within 5 kilometers of the venue. Below are some hostel options in the area, and it is also worth checking airbnb. Advance booking is recommended as it is spring and close to cherry blossom season.

HOW DO I JOIN THE LETTERHEADS?

There is no formal membership structure – anyone with an interest in lettering and signs is already a Letterhead. A meet such as this one is an opportunity to connect with other likeminded individuals, learn a lot, and have plenty of fun doing so. Read more about the movement here.
